Life of the Party will be treating this more thoroughly in the near future as indicated before, but for now, Jimmy Akin, blogger and Catholic Answers apologist has offered up some clarifications. He emphasises phrases in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that are often left out of the discussion. Every Catholic who believes we have an obligation to welcome the 12 million + illegal immigrants who are already here by putting them on a "path to citizenship" should read this post.
What Does Catholic Teaching REALLY Say About Immigration?

Thanks for posting this. Our parish is gung-ho for immigration. We are constantly reminded to “welcome the foreigner” and that Jesus, Mary and Joseph were refugees and we are put on a major guilt trip. That is all well and good but the situation we face in the US today is somewhat different. Mexico is actually more prosperous than it was 10 years ago. The economic reasons for emigrating just don’t hold water anymore. Walmart, Costco and other consumer outlets are found in Mexico because people there have the disposable income.
It is good to remember that the Church has no particular expertise in determining how many immigrants a country can absorb. That job is left up to the laity.
