6. Educate the public and caring citizens both substantively and morally to raise awareness of the open secret of corruption. Without this broad based increase in knowledge and awareness, your suggestions will not succeed. The average citizen is unaware of the existence of or story behind Enron, RICO or the IMF…but cares a great deal about daily costs of living and the practices that sustain these. We must draw these connections and bring this awareness through our schools and media.

FINALLY!! An article that makes sense. I’ve been researching information about the relationship of the price of oil and gas when prices were regulated as opposed to deregulated. There was an article in my local paper this week that stated that oil refinery production rates were at their lowest since the mid 80’s. I worked in the agricultural chemical refining business for 33 years and my company, at times, operated at reduced capacity to insure high prices for our product remained artificially high while saving on production, electrical and maintenance costs. When prices declined due to certain market factors, we increased production rates in an attempt to maintain profit margins. Oil companies are saving money on production costs while gouging the public with high gasoline prices and using the excuse “no new refineries in 25 years to increase refining capacity”. What a hoax!!

Very interesting article, I will be saving to reread several times. I was trying to locate information on international gas prices for the years 1960,1970,1980,1990,2000 and today in order to graphically depict it to compare and see whether or not the rest of the world has been seeing the same trend as the united states. I remember being stationed in Iwakuni Japan in 1979 and gasoline was 1.50 per liter (4.20/gallon) then, all their vehicles were 2-stroke gas misers. I would also like to plot the refining capacity versus actual production for the same countries and years. Im having trouble locating that information and believe it would help clarify whats going on with gasoline prices in a way that could be easily recognizable by the average Joe or Joline
