…Rudi Giuliani would have found himself under arrest and prosecuted for aiding and abetting…
Rudi’s firefight with firefighters
The Romney campaign is calling this (the video linked immediately above) Giuliani’s “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” moment. But there are some glitches. The video makes no attempt to hide that it was produced by the Fierfighters union. That group has long had the reputation of being in the pocket of the Democrat Party. The obvious defense for Rudi is that the responsibility to secure better radio equipment falls somewhere further down the chain of command, and you can see in the video that the union anticipated that because they keep repeating, “Well, Giuliani was mayor and ultimately the responsibility is his.” They do not, however, reveal any documentation showing any notice to him of the problem or attempts to have it addressed. It is said that the transmission towers for those radios were knocked out by the very 9/11 attack to which the firefighters were responding.
But the one “smoking gun” (colorful metaphor unintended) for which there is no good “Rudi” answer is the public testimony of the former Mayor that the 121 firefighters who actually died for lack of radio communications did so, instead, intentionally, by universally disobeying orders (which he then goes on to describe as an act of suicidal heroism). That kind of statement, which evokes great respect for the deceased and sympathy for their victimized families, is also great political theatre for Giuliani. His aparent reverence for those he’s lying about was easily transformed into reverence for him, by the general public who didn’t know he was lying. It begs the question:
“How much of Giuliani’s image as ’strong against terrorism’ is staging… contrived by nothing more than verbal posturing?”
For instance…
The former mayor, in the debates, has made reference to the fact that three of the six men charged in the Fort Dix terrorist plot were illegal immigrants (who should have long ago been deported). This was clearly an example of Giuliani’s political theatre, intended to signal Republicans that he is an opponent of illegal alien amnesty, but it is the exact opposite of the truth. Had those exact same Ft. Dix terrorists lived in New York City, and been just as repeatedly arrested, they would have been protected from deportation by Rudi Giuliani, who used his position as Mayor to run a strident and illegal policy as a SANCTUARY CITY.
Now indulge me in a little hypothetical scenario.
Imagine that sometime during Rudi’s tenure as NY mayor we had had a President that took his responsibility to enforce Federal Law seriously. Let’s imagine that it was Tom Tancredo. Rudi Giuliani would have found himself under arrest and prosecuted for aiding and abetting the violation of Federal Law, a crime.
Who’s tough on crime, now, Julie?

Any politician who tries to get elected on a platform of supporting term limits, and when it comes to Tancredo we are talking 120% effort on it, then breaks his promise, well, will never be President. No matter how much I like Tancredo’s positions, he just like Romney will be a no good lying SOB politician.
Thanks for the comment, Doug. You inspired a whole article. I responded here.
