It was the premise that was compelling. An under-aged teen girl had choked to death on her own vomit. Her similarly under-aged friends were being pursued for homicide simply because they let it happen. The girl is the nation. Her friends are the Republican Party. You are the judge.
Or perhaps, the girl’s father.
Elliot and Olivia, the detectives, who gradually uncover more and more unsavory stuff going on in the teen culture that incubated the girl’s death, have trouble, both with the Judge and the girl’s angry father. The judge wants to be lenient. The father wants a hanging.
The teens in the detectives’ crosshairs all got drunk together and when the girl was dying they were afraid to call for help because their conduct would be uncovered. They had illegally obtained alcohol and illegally consumed it to the point of illegal intoxication in dishonest circumstances. So as the nation gasped for breath in its waning moments they were only concerned with avoiding being exposed for the wrong doing they’d already committed. They did not kill her. They all simply participated in creating the circumstances that fostered the fun activities that they had all loved so much that led, directly to her death AND sat motionless as she choked out her last AND cleaned up the body.
And what a party it was from 2000 to 2006! And then, between 2006 and 2007 she began to lose consciousness. And in 2008 she began choking.
aAnd help was available in 2008, but the party didn’t want its culpability exposed.
And the vital signs tell us she is dying now, but they don’t want to give up the right to party.
For your right
To Paaaaaar tay!
The father was furious. He interrupted the bail hearing when the judge released the candidates to the custody of their parents. “They murdered my daughter!!”
The judge, however, clearly did not want any homicide prosecution (probation for drinking perhaps). When confronted, later, by the detectives, she argued that the kids had their whole lives ahead of them and shouldn’t be unduly punished for an indiscretion, however unfortunate. They had, after all, no intention of ruining the Republican Brand, dismantling the Reagan Coalition, expanding government more than had ever been done to that point in American history, lighting the fuse of economic meltdown and nominating an unelectable half-Democrat stooge to hand the Presidency to a Marxist community organizer. Stuff just happens when you’re having fun.
