Last week we reported on the (then-upcoming) emergency school exercise in Lynden Thursday, February 21. We warned that the danger posed was if the dress rehearsal FEMA was planning in association with the schools would [coincidentally] coincide with a real disaster as has been so often the case with such exercises (including Sandy Hook).
The articles tripled our readership for a day, generated discussion on social media, and ignited a firestorm of protest from school administration/Government Emergency insiders who wrote angry messages to the Reagan Wing claiming to be local parents.
They were outraged at the connection from their “tabletop exercise” to the potential disaster they were planning for.
But they were even more outraged at the documented connection between real school disasters and staged “drills” for the same tragedies that frequently take place at the same time (that are then used as a campaign opportunity for the very gun-grabbing politicians who provide all the funding.) Of course this is all pure coincidence. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Here’s a brief sampling:
Let’s examine the facts in light of their own announcements through the Lynden Tribune:
What was the “tabletop exercise?”
In this exercise, leaders from each organization involved will gather in a room and propose a scenario…whatever incident is chosen“
What kinds of incidents would be considered?
…plans such as these are at the forefront of the national consciousness in the wake of the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook…”
Preparing for a school shooting was definitely among the “options”
Now, bear in mind that we were told the exact nature of the disaster was yet to be chosen.
What would be done with the “incident” once it was chosen in the “tabletop exercise?”
…to be put on a specific school in town, and that school then puts its safety plan through the paces to see if it is sufficient to deal with whatever incident is chosen. Simultaneously, as the affected school acts out its response, other schools in town will go through an exercise acting as though another school in the vicinity has experienced an incident.
What actually happened?
Here is the factual timeline:
Wednesday, Feb. 20:
ReaganWing articles appear sounding an alarm that the school “drill” could forecast a real disaster.
Thursday, Feb. 21:
While their apologists frothed at the mouth about the Reagan Wing, the “tabletop exercise” in Lynden chose its “disaster”
Friday, Feb. 22:
The media announces the winning entry in the “tabletop” disaster contest.
…The exercise’s proposed scenario was a boiler explosion,”
Monday, Feb 25:
No school today at Sehome High School in Bellingham after an explosion and fire knocked out power to the school and the surrounding neighborhood. Officials say the blast happened in a boiler room on the campus shortly before midnight last night and required a three-alarm response. People reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a bright flash of light, after which homes in the area lost electricity.
Authorities say the fire was contained to the boiler room and there were no reported injuries.
We’re grateful to FEMA for being so prepared for this dangerous incident in such a timely fashion. Remember, Folks, this is a coincidence. Move along.
